The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) has successfully drilled a new well at the riverine community of Hackney, along the Pomeroon River, as part of the village’s new water supply system.

Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Hon. Susan Rodrigues, personally inspected the well site today. She was joined by Prime Ministerial Representative, Mr. Arnold Adams, GWI Hinterland Services Director, Mr. Ramchand Jailal and other representatives.

The well was drilled to a depth of approximately 280 feet by GWI’s in-house team and is producing water.

Minister Rodrigues emphasized that the completion of the well drilling is one aspect of the system.

The subsequent steps involve installing solar panels, pumps, and establishing distribution networks. Notably, the water company plans to engage local labor for these tasks, with at least six individuals from the community expected to work alongside GWI’s technical staff.

The labour contract was officially presented by Minister Rodrigues to Ms. Althia Giles, Overseer of the Moruca-Providence Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC).

Upon the entire system’s completion, around forty households in the immediate area will enjoy direct water connections to their homes, as well as, the nearby schools. Furthermore, a connection will be extended to the entrance of the community to benefit residents from neighboring villages and passersby.

The project is slated for completion by the end of March.

GWI is also drilling a new well at Friendship, reaching depths of about 300 feet, to serve approximately 200 residents and the local school compound. Minister Rodrigues and team also visited the site.

This initiative aligns with the broader governmental macroplan, aiming to achieve 100% water access in hinterland and riverine communities by 2025. The recent commissioning of the Capoey Water Supply System in Region Two further demonstrates the commitment to enhancing water infrastructure in remote areas. New treatment plants are also in the works, reinforcing the government’s dedication to ensuring water accessibility throughout the region.
