The lives of six families from the East Coast of Demerara have been changed for the better, as they no longer have to worry about living in dilapidated structures or renting. These families, from the communities of Haslington, Non Pariel, Lusignan, Good Hope, and Cummings Lodge, received the keys to their new ‘Core Homes’ and Certificates of Inspection under the Adequate Housing and Urban Accessibility Programme (AHUAP). June 7, 2024: Staying true to its vision of providing a better quality of life for all, another five families today received keys to their brand-new homes under the Core Home Support Programme.
The Handing over signals new beginnings for these families who once had to endure less-than-desirable living conditions.
The Government of Guyana, with support from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) is currently implementing the Road Network Upgrade and Expansion Programme: Adequate Housing and Urban Accessibility Programme” or AHUAP. The programme is specifically aimed at improving the quality of life in urban and peri-urban Georgetown, through better access to adequate housing and basic infrastructure for low-income populations, enhance urban and suburban mobility and safety, and strengthen national and local capacity to operate and maintain urban services. In general, this project, especially sub-component 1.2 involves major civil works including excavation, culverts, stone masonry work, rehabilitation of drains, vegetation clearing, earth (soil) movement/transport, placement and compaction of fill and embankment material, road pavement, asphalt/tarring etc. with potential environmental and social/health impacts.
