Works on $1.9 B Water Treatment Plant at Bachelor’s Adventure, East Coast Demerara are about 30% completed and with a completion date set for December 2024, some 25,000 residents will benefit from this project.
Today, subject Minister, Hon. Collin Croal and engineers from the Guyana Water Inc, visited the project site to inspect the ongoing works and address concerns raised. Minister Croal expressed his satisfaction with the work completed to date, noting that works are on schedule. He added that this project is a testament to the government’s commitment to increase coverage of treated water to the coastline.
“We are committed to our mandate to increase coverage for treated water and to ensure we deliver potable water to unserved areas.”
This project falls under the Coastal Water Treatment Infrastructure Programme (CWTIP). Under this $40 B Project, a total of seven, (7) large new treatment plants and fifteen (15) small plants are being constructed, twelve (12) existing plants are being upgraded and 200 KM of transmission mains are being installed to improve water quality, continuity of service and level of service in regions 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.
The Bachelor’s Adventure Plant upon completion will serve to remove the iron content from the well before distribution. Also, the wells at Enmore will be transferred to this new plant for treatment and further distribution.
The works to be carried out on this facility include, the installation of three new filters, contact tank, storage tank and the pumping station, which is designed to treat 20 million litres per day (MLD). This facility is being constructed by Sigma Engineers Ltd at a cost of 1.9 billion Guyana dollars and is on scheduled to be completed in December 2024. Residents of Coldingen, Non Pariel, Enterprise, Melanie Damishana, Bachelor’s Adventure, Bareroot, Logwood, Paradise, Dazzelle Housing Coop, Foulis, Enmore, Haslington, Golden Grove and Nabaclis will benefit from this new facility. Additionally, contracts for four of the six lots valued at G$1.05 billion Guyana dollars were also awarded for the construction of 28 KM of new transmission mains from the Bachelor’s Adventure Water Treatment Plant to customers between Coldingen and Nabaclis.
Also, the Minister and team visited the newly refurbished Sparendaam Water Treatment Plant, which is now serving treated water to more than five thousand (5,000) residents, south of the railway embankment in Goedverwagting, Sparendaam, Plaisance and Better Hope on the East Coast of Demerara. The Sparendaam well station was upgraded to a 4.5 million litre per day (MLD) Water Treatment Plant.
The new inline filter was installed by Compass Industrial Services in the last quarter of 2023. The plant was commissioned in January 2024 by engineers from Adedge Water Technologies of Atlanta. This is the second inline filter commissioned in Guyana, which reduced the capital cost of water treatment for small communities. This pilot project has demonstrated the opportunity to apply this approach in fifteen communities in 2024 and 2025.
