Minister Rodrigues joins reg. Two for Indian Arrival Day celebration

Traditional song, dance, Qaseedas, hymns, and poetry celebrating Guyana’s rich culture were showcased earlier today when Minister Susan Rodrigues joined the people of Essequibo for the 187th Indian Arrival Day celebration.

The Annual Indian Arrival Day program was organized by the Regional Democratic Council of Reg. Two and was held at the Bush Lot Monument site.

Minister Rodrigues, on this significant day in the history of Guyana, emphasized the importance of recognizing and celebrating the arrival of the first group of Indians. She stated that these individuals laid the foundation for a legacy that continues to shape our nation.

“They came as indentured labourers, bringing with them little more than hope as they faced harsh conditions,” she said.

She highlighted the need to acknowledge their courage and sacrifices in undertaking the journey to this new land. Furthermore, she called upon elders and those in positions of authority to continue their efforts in preserving cultures. The preservation of our rich and diverse cultural heritage, she asserted, cannot be overstated.

The Minister also commended those responsible for the cultural aspects of the program, noting that the cultural presentation showcased remarkable artistry and served as a testament to the vibrancy of our culture, which is very much alive and being passed down through generations.

“We need to examine the social fabric of our society,” she remarked, adding that the government is implementing initiatives aimed at strengthening this fabric and ensuring that Guyana’s rich and diverse culture remains vibrant and alive.

Additionally, she urged families to play their part in teaching the younger generation about their roots and to work together to create an environment where every Guyanese feels comfortable sharing and showcasing their culture.
