Swan residents laud development in their Community as Min Rodrigues outlines future plans

During a community meeting held on Monday, March 24, Minister Susan Rodrigues-Minister the Ministry, came together with local leaders and residents of Swan, Linden/ Soesdyke Highway, came together to discuss significant infrastructure advancements and address pressing concerns within the community. The meeting was spearheaded by Minister Rodrigues, with key contributions from Fenton Tagnauth, Chairman of the Swan Community Development Council (CDC), Lawrence Singh, Treasurer of the Swan CDC, Michelle Drepaul, Chairperson of the NDC for Lamaha/Yarrowkabra. Also in attendance was the Deputy Director of the Community Development Department- CH&PA Mrs. Donel Bess-Bascom and representatives from the Guyana Lands and Survey Commission and the Guyana Water Incorporated.

A highlight of the meeting was the announcement of impressive road development initiatives that have seen over 80 roads submitted for improvement, with more than 50 already completed or in progress. Michelle Drepaul praised these efforts, emphasizing the positive impact on local connectivity and community cohesion.

Further enhancing the community’s infrastructure, the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs (MOAA) has allocated $24 million for the construction of a new market square, set to become a vibrant centre for commerce and social interactions.

Minister Rodrigues commended the development of Swan over the past five years, noting the reduction in reliance on unpaved tracks and the transformation into a cohesive community. “Swan is evolving,” she stated, highlighting the joint efforts of residents and the government. The Ministry of Housing and Water has also made significant strides, with over 41,000 housing lots allocated out of a goal of 50,000, as part of a national initiative to enhance home ownership.

In an ambitious move toward improved water access, the community is benefitting from the completion of over 140 wells since 2020, increasing the hinterland’s water supply from 46% to over 90%. The government is aiming for 100% water access in every community by 2025.

Minister Rodrigues also made mention of exciting future developments, including the ongoing Soesdyke/Linden Highway project and the construction of 200 houses in Silica City, along with plans for 500 housing units designated for single mothers in Yarrowkabra.

The meeting also provided a vital platform for residents to voice their concerns. One community member, who has faced personal challenges, appealed for public assistance, prompting Minister Rodrigues to offer her support. Other issues discussed included water shortages in One Mile Turn and ongoing electrical issues in Tower Road. The Minister pledged to meet with residents to explore solutions that would address these infrastructure challenges promptly.
