A $19.4 M contract for the upgrading of the water distribution network in the village of St. Ignatius has been handed to Romesh Kissoon of R. Kissoon Contracting Services. Minister of Housing and Water, the Hon. Collin D Croal on Sunday evening handed over the contract to Mr. Kissoon while a copy was also presented to the Village Toshao Mr. Wilson Laurentino.
During the handing over ceremony, the Minister noted that this project will further enhance the services received in the village and will cater to additional households.
“We have been working in Region Nine to up the level of service we offer to you, we are handing this contract for which the scope of works will include an interconnecting system and additional distribution network”.
Also, 20 new connections will be made and residents will be benefitting from 24/7 access to potable water.
In his charge to the contractor, the Minister called for close collaboration with the Village Council and timely delivery of quality work.
The Village Council was also informed that as part of Mr. Kissoon’s Corporate Social Responsibility, he will be donating some electronic tablets for school-age children.
Also, earlier in the day the Minister and a team headed by Hinterland Service Director, Mr. Ramchand Jailall visited a well site at Toka Village. That well is expected to serve some 300 residents upon completion. This is the fourth well drilled so far for the year in the Rupununi region.
The Minister is currently on a three-day visit to the region along with Ministers, the Honorable Nigel Dharamlall and Vickram Bharrat. The Ministerial team has been visiting several villages in the region, as they conduct flood assessment.
Minister Croal also visited the village of Parishara where he met with flood-affected families. The Minister was accompanied by Regional Chairman Mr. Brian Allicock. Like other regions in Guyana villages in the Rupununi have been severely affected by heavy rainfall as the government continues to conduct an assessment and bring relief to these communities.
